The Gumball Rally was a seminal cinematic moment for me as a pretty young kid. Shelby Cobras, Mustangs, Camaros, even a motorcycle. But that bright red Ferrari had me smitten. It is the reason for my obsession. I was 10 years old when this movie came out and I cannot even be sure if my parents actually let me see it at a theater.

And now, my friend, the first rule of Italian driving: what’s behind me is not important.

- Raul Julia's character in The Gumball Rally

Roger Ebert probably made one of his worst predictions of all time:

But let's not get started on ratings. What I meant to say, before interrupting myself, is that although we are all going to have the greatest difficulty even remembering the name of "The Gumball Rally" in three months' time , it is a pleasant, slick, inoffensive entertainment. It contains some difficult and well-coordinated stunt driving. It has a fairly good cast. And it never makes you want to flee the theater.

It certainly wasn't forgotten after three weeks, though it is a bad movie, let's be honest. However, it created untold millions of car-crazed youths around the world who are now adults. Some even have money. And lots of money.

Now a lucky person owns the actual Daytona Spider from this "forgettable" movie and paid $1.5 Million dollars for it.

Thanks for sharing that. "The Cannonball Run" has a lot to do with my love for the Countach for the very same reason. It was definitely already several years old and I was probably about ten or so the first time I saw it.

How could any ten year old resist this:

Oh wait I meant this:

Movie history aside $1.5m is about market correct for a factory Daytona Spyder at the moment.

There were actually two Daytona Spyder's used in the Gumball Rally, the other was also used and wrecked in the Kris Kristoffersen movie 'A Star is Born' the wreck was brought by Luigi Chinetti and rebodied by Michellotti.

Damn straight, son...

I too, was 10-11 years old when Cannonball Run came out. The opening sequence blew. My. Mind.

I had seen a Countach before, but only in a R&T road test. However, I had never heard a Countach before. The sound, the doors, the wings. OMG it was fantastic.

I must post it now

Man, I think it's a combo of the color and the angle the photo was taken, but it totally looks like a Miata-based kit, right there.

Cool. Was there any mention of whether or not it had a rear-view mirror?
